The files are probably in use, so you can't move them. I think you may need to do a defrag before windows is up and running. I don't think the bundled version that comes with windows probably does not support that (in XP and older it was a defeatured commercial product), but there are some commercial ones that do. Diskkeeper and PerfectDisk come to mind, but there are others.

I'm at a loss. The best suggestions I have is try re-installing the drivers or trying the non-proprietary nv driver. If the problem is still there with the nv driver, then it is most likely not a driver issue. Good Luck.

Are you using the proprietary Nvidia drivers or the Xorg Nvidia drivers? Also, have you tried disabling Compiz or other eye-candy?

What you are looking for is cards that use the NVidia chipsets, even if they aren't made by NVidia. I have had good luck with several different brands. Bottom-end seems to be about ~$25 for a 2 year old chipset that will play most games (and even do VDPAU if you are in to MythTV). Top end? More than a new motherboard.

It's possible he may not be running ext4. I run Ubuntu 10.04 on all my machines, but run JFS on several drives. AFAIK JFS does support creation time stamps.

Long shot: What type of cable is going to the monitor? I've had some strange problems setting resolutions when using DVI cables because because "something" in Ubuntu didn't thing the monitor could do it. When I switched to a good-old-VGA cable, things worked.
