comment How to tweak Ubuntu running on an old PC?
Sounds slightly hotter than my MythTV frontend (P3 1GHz, 384M RAM). I run Ubuntu 10.04 on that without too much problem, but it really mostly for MythTV and some lightweight gaming.

comment Connect to NFS on availability
My experience with banshee looking at music on an automount is that whenever banshee looks at the drive, it is there, so it never misses the directory. (That's the point of automount.) The only exception is when the server crashes or the network goes down, but that would happen to any remote mount and has been very rare.

comment to clone a filesystem from a remote system to a local HD
That's because /dev/hda1 is a block device and doesn't look like a file (at least to rsync). Assuming / is mounted on /dev/hda1 (doing df should tell you), you should be able to do "rsync -cavzpx admin@X.X.X.X:/ /home/user/Desktop/backup/" (I think it will 'do the right thing' with /proc and /dev.) The -x tells it to stick with the disk it is on.

comment How can I get an nfs mount in fstab to use the bg option to mount a server when it eventually comes up
I'm not sure why you would need symlinks to /net. Autofs can be setup for auto-mounting anywhere. For example, I auto-mount several shared drives to common points on the Linux boxes on my network: one goes to /mnt/public, another to /var/lib/mythtv/recordings, another to /var/lib/mythtv/videos, etc... These are all defined in auto.data. I never use /net unless I am doing a temporary or one-time mount. As for load, I am not convinced that this will cause that much of an increase, but YMMV. It's old tech from the days when 256Meg was a lot of RAM.

comment Can't find Windows after installing Ubuntu
If there is data you want off the former Windows install, STOP USING THE COMPUTER NOW and find another one (at a friends or a library, etc.) The more you use the computer, the more chance of overwriting stuff.

comment What are full partition/disk imaging solutions that produce mountable images?
There are some ways to get at the contents of the image without restoring it to a physical drive. I've updated the answer with what I know.
