For some years, I've had to use Linux in an academic setting and also fiddled around with the BSD-style Unix on OS X. Recently a friend and long-time Linux user convinced me to take the plunge and use Linux full-time.
I enjoy using Ubuntu (sans Unity) and think open-source software will, and should, play a more dominant role in normal people's lives, but I am far from a Linux advocate. Or to put it another way, I'm more like a Linus than a Stallman.
I like using the Awesome window-manager. Many questions about Awesome can be resolved by perusing a more experienced user's rc.lua file, so here's mine, and hopefully it will resolve some of your questions.
Most recently, I've been using i3.

Firefox window is distorted/broken after changing from fullscreen Check if the problem is with Firefox by using another browser. If it is and you are updated to the latest version, consider going back to an earlier version. |

Is installing Ubuntu on Mac as simple as installing on a generic PC? Regarding the suspend/resume on Mac laptops, upgrading to 12.04 fixed that issue for me. No hardware problems from the upgrade either, so I consider it a success :) |

Firefox window is distorted/broken after changing from fullscreen You've tried restarting? Can you reproduce the problem every time, or is it just occasionally? |

the size of apt-get update lists is too big Just noticed the mirror has updated, so I tried sudo apt-get update and found... ~13MB again. @dumb906, unless it really worked for you, please unaccept my answer. This issue is still unresolved. |

the size of apt-get update lists is too big Well, let's not jump the gun here! Did you check the last-modified date using John's suggestion? I've now tried another mirror and checked the last-modified date. The new mirror apparently takes a day or so to update, so I'll update my response with the result. I have a good feeling about it, since the first apt-get update from the mirror was not large like with the outdated mirrors. |

How to suspend from command line such that screen is locked? use a simple locking program like i3lock instead. Given that all it does is lock the screen, I think it should avoid whatever interaction is going on here with the screensaver programs. |

the size of apt-get update lists is too big I've been informed the S3-backed servers are having issues right now. I've noticed these large fetches ever since early 12.04 alpha (I wasn't on Oneiric long enough to notice there). |

the size of apt-get update lists is too big Yes, but I've always noticed this: ~13 MB fetches even when done in 30 minute intervals. This is normal, you say? |

the size of apt-get update lists is too big This seems to be the common refrain, but "sustained activity" can't explain why people have been experiencing this issue on Mint 11 and 12, 11.10 in addition to 12.04 (Note I've always had these large fetches since early alpha of 12.04). Please take a look at the links given in comments elsewhere on this question. Basically, the issue is this: people using apt-get update several times a day find large 10-20MB fetches. There is obviously not THAT much activity. I'm beginning to think a bug report is the correct response here. |

Which version of Ubuntu should I install on a macbook pro (intel)? This alternate installation has a "fix" to make sure the installation process goes smoothly for Macs. But it will install the same stuff as the normal install. So there is absolutely no point to trying this. |
