I enjoy using Ubuntu (sans Unity) and think open-source software will, and should, play a more dominant role in normal people's lives, but I am far from a Linux advocate. Or to put it another way, I'm more like a Linus than a Stallman.

Perhaps I'm the only one amused by this, but my most popular answers relate to opening magnet links from a web browser.

I like using the Awesome window-manager. Many questions about Awesome can be resolved by perusing a more experienced user's rc.lua file.

Most recently, I've been trying out i3, but I think I'll stick with Awesome as my main environment.

comment How to set up Google Chrome as default browser in Xubuntu
Chrome often doesn't seem to think it is the default browser (even when it is) on Linux. That the Xfce shortcut for Web Browser does not work when you've set Preferred Apps is odd, but easily fixed by replacing the shortcut for a shortcut for Chrome. One way to tell your default browser is really chrome is to click on links in various applications and see if they open in Chrome. From what you've described, it should work.

You uninstalled Firefox, so presumably only have Chrome left as a browser... so what exactly are you trying to do that leads to the conclusion Chrome isn't your default browser?

comment Can I legally build and sell desktops with Ubuntu pre-installed?
Not actually. The "commercial use" refers to use of the trademark. So don't refer to or use the Ubuntu trademark in a way that suggests you are affiliated with Canonical, but go ahead and sell the computer with pre-installed Ubuntu.

comment Ubuntu Freezing (Chrome Runs Out of Memory?)
"Performing better" is not synonymous with "less memory". On 11.10, at least, Chrome is shown to use more memory than Firefox, but manage it better.

Yes, your xorg.conf format is correct. How did you create/edit your file?

Possible duplicate: askubuntu.com/q/28495/43660 Not exactly a duplicate, but shows your question is the least of your problems.

Monospace font is indeed thicker when bold than not... that's what bold means. Do you mean wider? It's not wider. If the same word in Monospace take up more of the line when bold versus normal, then perhaps Eclipse is changing the font size on you.

comment License concerns for Ubuntu/Linux and a prospective business
To just clarify an already fine answer, you can charge for anything, even the source code. But since the requirement is that you have to provide them with the source code, nobody would actually buy the source code if you offered to sell it.

comment Why can't Ubuntu 12.04 detect my screen resolution?
The essential piece of info, which is missing, is the graphics you have, not the kind of monitor, size of display, etc.

comment Is it possible to set the default behaviour of double clicking a folder to be “Open in New Window” with PCManFM?
The only answer I've found to this is to just recompile PCManFM with a parameter changed. I don't have the link handy, but I found it through Google on either the Crunchbang or Arch forums.

It doesn't seem like you read my post very carefully. Incidentally, you shouldn't have to kill xcompmgr. Just don't start it in the first place.

Make sure the path is /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The first slash is important.

Hi John. Thanks for all your work. With regard to what is perhaps a triviality, I'd like to reward @chilicuil somehow, but as he has not posted an answer and yours is the most informative answer, I think I'll reward you the bounty.

The nouveau driver doesn't seem to have the same problem. The only thing I was able to diagnose that seems different is that with nouveau the FPS is about 600 without any additional configuration needed by me.

Hi David. I've uploaded an image of my alleged tearing :-) Please tell me if it matches "tearing". It happens pretty much on any video I watch, so I didn't think it was worth getting into specifics. Do you have any suggestions of what to test on specifically? I've tried those options (and subsequently removed them), but perhaps there's some combination I should try? If you can look at my pasted xorg.conf, let me know if there is anything seemingly amiss. How do I check if the GPU is not doing the work? Finally, yes the same videos never have an issue in OS X on the same machine.

Hi Alistair. Thanks for the suggestion, but I use only a single display.
