I enjoy using Ubuntu (sans Unity) and think open-source software will, and should, play a more dominant role in normal people's lives, but I am far from a Linux advocate. Or to put it another way, I'm more like a Linus than a Stallman.

Perhaps I'm the only one amused by this, but my most popular answers relate to opening magnet links from a web browser.

I like using the Awesome window-manager. Many questions about Awesome can be resolved by perusing a more experienced user's rc.lua file.

Most recently, I've been trying out i3, but I think I'll stick with Awesome as my main environment.

comment Can someone please compare the safety issues between Ubuntu and windows OS?
This question has a somewhat different flavor though. It's asking if s/he is safer on the Web with Ubuntu versus Windows, OS X, etc. The reality is that if there's a security flaw in Firefox due to something in Javascript or some other web tech, I don't think being on Ubuntu will make you significantly safer, at least as far as not having your private info like credit card number or passwords stolen.

A reasonable answer, except that many businesses use Linux servers and the potential gains for a hacker are significantly more than attacking a desktop. The difference is that servers are maintained by sysadmins who are more security-conscious than a typical Windows user. So I'd say something like "malware is written to attack the largest, vulnerable population".

comment How do I download a YouTube video?
You're unlikely to find a useful Chrome extension by searching the Chrome Store because enabling YouTube video download violates the store's Terms of Services. However, if you install the "YouTube Options" extension, you'll find a disabled download option which you can enable by installing the full version (obtainable from the developer's website by following the link in the crippled version's options).

comment Ubuntu freezes, mostly when Chrome is being used
Wubi has had stability problems in the past, far more than Ubuntu itself. I believe they are mostly fixed, but you should check the Wubi-specific areas in the Ubuntu forums.

comment Why isn't VLC the default video player?
aking1012 didn't just explain it better. He actually explained it. You did too (although not as in-depth) in your last comment: "integrates better...(gnome libs...) VLC doesn't". That's a real explanation. Saying there had to be some choice doesn't explain anything. OP knows they had to make a choice. And he knows they have some reasons. What are they? That's his question.

comment How do I make my machine stop freezing during startup?
The "dupe" is actually about freezing after the system has started up. Nobody there has addressed what happens when startup stalls.

comment Why isn't VLC the default video player?
Gabriel is asking what the reasons are for making Totem default instead of VLC. To answer by saying 'they have to choose something and you can't please everyone' doesn't even come close to answering the question.

comment What would be a good opensource software for graphing circles, circular regions, and regions bounded by curves and/or arcs?
Try Inkscape. It's an open-source Illustrator clone, but more simple.

Try using lxappearance, which you can install in the typical manner.

You're not editing the file correctly. You probably either messed up the path or forgot you need to use sudo to edit the file.

The expression just means "not as good", not "not as monetarily demanding". See this for example.

comment How can I uniqely record every new command I use, and possibly timestamp it?
It's worth pointing out that when you say eliminate "duplicates" here, this means eliminating the same command lines in the history. But if you used the same command with different files or parameters, they will not count as duplicates.
