comment What is “dist-upgrade” and why does it upgrade more than “upgrade”?
Besides what Eliah mentioned, the essential point is that apt-get upgrade will not remove or add packages. If a fix to a package requires a new package, the update will be held back. pablomme's answer, which you revised to be less accurate, is better and I'd advise readers to go to that one.

comment What do I do when Ubuntu 12.10 freezes while starting up?
Which session are you trying to log into? Have you tried logging into a desktop environment that has less intensive graphics?

comment Youtube videos are slow?
So you say videos from other sites are streaming quickly, and the problem is only with YouTube? What happens when you run Firefox in safe mode? i.e. type firefox -safe-mode at the terminal

At the risk of looking narcissistic, I just found my own answer very useful once again, so I undeleted it. :-/

comment Should I be afraid to install NVIDIA driver updates?
Nvidia drivers are particularly notorious for regressions, e.g. an update may break something, the next will fix it but break something else, etc. If you're happy with the current version, I'd stick with it.

I'd try the DVD route before USB. See this to see why.

comment How to install Lubuntu Desktop Environment and ONLY the desktop environment?
I would start by just installing openbox. This will create an "openbox" option in lightdm. Then just install the individual parts of LXDE, of which there are only a few and configure your openbox to use them. Then use the openbox session to use your LXDE-only setup.

comment DATA LOSS V V IMPORTANT
It sounds like you chose to erase over your old info... and that's what the install did. There are recovery programs and such you can try, but this isn't really a linux problem anymore.

comment How to watch Apple keynote videos from the website
@MarcoCeppi I'm baffled as to why Apple wouldn't want as many people to watch this as possible. It's probably more a web development issue than a decree from Apple to bar Linux users from watching their streams. Anyway, it's not hard to get around; see my answer below.

comment Awesome WM menu missing Firefox
I'm also unsure whether there was ever an item for sensible-browser in the original Debian menu. In any case, the issue is how to get items onto the Debian menu; it is not an Awesome issue.

comment Awesome WM menu missing Firefox
Looks like some apps like Firefox no longer bother with a Debian menu entry: ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1999752.html

comment Awesome WM menu missing Firefox
I must have been distracted when I typed that... sorry! I do have the same structure, but under "Network" I have "Web Browsing", which lists several browsers but strangely not Firefox (which I have installed).

comment How do I replace a binary with a shell script in a unity launcher?
Just to make sure, your shell script name is ec, not ec.sh, right? Also, if you're using Nautilus, on double-click it will ask what to do with a shell script, since it's also considered a text file. So I don't think that's related to your problem.

Did you make ec executable?

comment How to change circular icon to indicate chosen session in unity-greeter?
@vasa1 The little mouse badge is called custom_xubuntu_badge.png and is located in /usr/share/unity-greeter. If your session file is named xubuntu.desktop, then that badge will be used (as explained in the accepted answer). So you can either change the name of the session or copy the xubuntu badge but name it as custom_xfce_badge.png (assuming your session file is named xfce.desktop).
