I enjoy using Ubuntu (sans Unity) and think open-source software will, and should, play a more dominant role in normal people's lives, but I am far from a Linux advocate. Or to put it another way, I'm more like a Linus than a Stallman.

Perhaps I'm the only one amused by this, but my most popular answers relate to opening magnet links from a web browser.

I like using the Awesome window-manager. Many questions about Awesome can be resolved by perusing a more experienced user's rc.lua file.

Most recently, I've been trying out i3, but I think I'll stick with Awesome as my main environment.

comment Is Mactel PPA good stuff for Macbook Pro 5,3 with Ubuntu 13.04?
It's a very old PPA. I don't recommend using it. Fixes to a lot of issues are incorporated into Ubuntu now.

comment Error: partition table requires a separate partition for boot loader code (EFI issue)
This was what I meant earlier in the chat room. Just pick your EFI partition on your main disk as the bootloader location. According to Wikipedia, this may affect later firmware updates, but my mac was old enough I didn't really care (not likely to be any useful updates).

Yes, a tough one! How about installing Google Chrome which has its own flash, to see how that works?

Do you have all your extensions off? Try starting Firefox in safe mode, i.e. firefox --safe-mode.
