Just to clarify my last comment: My plan was just to dd one flash onto another and keep it in the safe, in case I ever need it for recovery

Thanks... I think I'm understanding now how aufs could be used to protect the flash drive. I'm still failing to understand why LVM, but your answer is the best so far, and it doesn't seem that there is a better solution at this time

@Huckle I would prefer more comprehensive answer. I want to be run OS in a way that is optimized for a flash drive. Minimizing writes is part of it, but it's not the answer. I would like to run OS using file system which specifically targets flash drives
