comment Why does my internet speed roughly *double* when switching from Ubuntu to Win XP?
My comment above gets deleted while the answer of "Available to all users" which is highly likely is not the cause of the slow speed is voted up? Really mods? C'mon guys! I'm not a networking expert but this supposed answer above doesn't even hold anything to explain the cause of the halved speed on Ubuntu as compared to XP.

comment Really slow boot time Ubuntu 12.10 Gnome 3.6
Image can be hardly seen. Bigger one would be better. There could also be more services that autostart on boot that isn't really necessary. For example, bluetooth or CUPs. If you hardly use both, you could probably set it so it doesn't start on boot.

comment Firestarter, Proxy and limited number of IP addresses to access
Not in my case. It does not stop working. Check Firestarter settings to reimplement the rules on start/stop of app/network. There should be something like that. For specific website access, it should be defined in your proxy rules. Note that you may have to also configure both HTTP and HTTPS access as each use different ports. For access to specific IPs other than HTTP, for example allow SSH inbound/outbound from X IP only, specify in your firewall.

comment Firestarter, Proxy and limited number of IP addresses to access
My iptables is a bit rusty. Been years since I've touched this but do check with iptables -nL. Basically, IIRC it should look like this - since you are whitelisting IPs, the default rules are to DROP all INPUT, OUTPUT and FORWARD. Then allow all INPUT, OUTPUT if the source/destination interface is local. Now create a rule (or rules) to specifically allow connections to X IP @ Y PORT @ what STATE.

comment Firestarter, Proxy and limited number of IP addresses to access
I just did a quick test. I installed Firestarter and added one rule to allow only incoming connections from Proxy IP and outgoing connections to the same IP (restrictive like you said). Nothing else, not even configuring which ports are allowed. It works. All other apps that need to connect directly are blocked. Only my browser, w/c I've configured to use proxy, can connect.

comment In 12.04 LTS, I get “No DBus” errors when running things as root
Isn't it not advisable to run apps like that with sudo instead of gksu. I forgot the reason why it's not advised.

Firewall and proxy are 2 different things. It looks like the proxy itself is refusing connections based on that output you pasted above. You can try to check proxy rules first, if it's working. Then configure your firewall afterwards.

comment Installing Ubuntu so that it can be removed without trace
There are boot loader editors available for Windows that allow one to manage booting different Windows versions, including Ubuntu/Linux. It's kinda tricky so read up first before doing anything. Also, I believe during Ubuntu installation, you can let the GRUB not write to the MBR.

comment How to hide console messages on shutdown?
This doesn't work on 13.04 and 12.04. I still see lots of console messages always.

comment Bumblebee and AMD Radeon cards
It does? Which AMD driver version has this support? I've given up hope already. Although that was more than a year ago when I was still using 11.04/11.10 and I regretted so much why I bought a laptop with a stupid AMD hybrid graphics.

comment How do I remove suhosin?
This one works on Ubuntu 12.04 server. I have tried it recently. Was scratching my head in bewilderment on why the form can't go beyond 25 file uploads, and I know I set to max at 30 under php.ini. In the end, it was this patch that was the culprit. Adding the above under php.ini solved it. Thank you for this tip! :)

comment I cannot access the BIOS after installing Ubuntu on Sony vaio e11 with Windows 8
Windows 8 hardware comes with UEFI + secure boot feature (one or both) if I'm not mistaken. This makes installing Ubuntu on such hardware cause issues. Read this: askubuntu.com/questions/130392/…

comment How to pin Eclipse to the Unity launcher?
@Salem Ok, this is late but you don't need the desktop file to have executable permission "On". Just leave it as it is, drag to the launcher and it will execute whatever you placed in the exec part of the .desktop file.

The solution above does not work. There are no options to install JavaEE Dev Tools even if the link is replaced.

comment Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Windows 8 dual OS
Hi, did this solution work? What I mean is that will Win8 boot from GRUB? I thought it needed a signed loader or something. I'm thinking of upgrading my office laptop from Win7 to Win8. But I am dual-booting it with Ubuntu. We have projects that needs to be on Windows thus I have both OS. Please, let me know your results.

comment Restoring grub?
You can still run Ubuntu, yes? Try this one: "sudo grub-install –root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda" but w/out quotes and do note change to proper device. The /dev/sda is just an example.

comment Is it worthy upgrading to 12.10 from 12.04 for a web developer?
I can already do that with Fogger. The integration may not be the same, but it runs each website like a separate app. I do this with Grooveshark and a number of webapps we make, just to give an example. The integration (webapps) I'm not very fond of because it kept on failing. At least this is my experience with 12.04. Then the Launcher integration is not too complete (not much options except for quit) that it's just wasting space. I do like the concept, but it needs further improvement. BTW, the tight integration, web + OS, doesn't help me with work. We do stuff for private companies.

comment Is it worthy upgrading to 12.10 from 12.04 for a web developer?
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 as my main OS @ work and I don't have plans to upgrade. I also do web development. IMO it's a matter of choice in the end. My reason is simple - I don't need to upgrade. Everything I need for development currently works on 12.04 and bumping up to 12.10 is not a need. Plus, like what you mentioned, I can't afford to break stuff just to get the bleeding edge versions of apps, etc. That will only delay work.
