I am a self taught WordPress designer and developer. I use the term Developer lightly since I'm much better at designing, but I am making ground on the developer side of things.

gdm is the default display manager but perhaps it's not installed. You probably have LightDM only, I'd guess.

You can manually place it using the boot-repair app from the live cd. Click on the advanced options and you'll see it in the options.

comment Where is the menu configuration stored?
I guess it's easier to just down-vote and not leave a comment explaining why? Maybe you could help me or others by explaining you vote.

Try to manually place the boot-loader on sda2 or sda3. It appears you have 2 partitions installed with Windows7 (sda2, sda3), and Ubuntu on sda5. It also appears you have the boot-loader on sda0 which doesn't contain an OS.

comment Gimp won't run, and I can't uninstall and reinstall it
Those weren't for copy and pasting, just an example. If you try to install gimp from the terminal you will see some Error code that will say "Depends: zlib1g ..." for example. You would then need to try to do sudo apt-get install zlib1g. THAT IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE. You'll need to use the actual packages that are failing to install that gimp depends on. If you past-bin your error code and link to it, I'll try to be move specific.

comment Is there any way I can increase my home folder size without uninstalling again?
You'll see the home folder in /media/yourdrivehere (it will have a long name like this: fd306a7e-4074-45c2-b29c-f9b540077949. You don't need to access the home folder to resize the partition though. You only need to open gparted and locate the partition containing your new installation.

Select try Ubuntu. You can use gParted from the live cd after selecting try Ubuntu.

It's a start. You'll can upgrade to the latest development version by pressing Alt+F2 and then type update-manager -c -d in the run dialog box.
