A long time programmer with lots of IBM and supplier-to-IBM experience using C/C++, Rexx, APL/2, assembler. Finally excaped from the Blue-o-sphere to work in the transportation industry creating firmware for gate access systems for containerized freight yards.

Translation: tons of not-the-way-anybody-else-does-it software development and experience writing software that lives somewhere between BIOS and applications. I've probably written well over a million lines of Rexx, my favorite language. And I am also an opinionated snob about editors. Them what aren'tderived from Xedit or look like VisualSlickEdit are junk.

comment What do I select for “GRUB install devices” after an update?
@StefanoPalazzo So what causes the install/don't install loop? I just had the same experience in 12.04.

comment How do I get the bash debugger to work with ddd?
Just followed your instructions on 12.04 / 64. Almost works. After bashdb loads the script I click "step" and go into an infinite wait for bash to finish starting. Suggestions?

comment How to make my own local repository?
@blade19899 I need a small bit of clarification, please. I want a repository with just a few select packages in it, not every package I ever touched. Am I correct that this technique will give me that ability? The goal here is to have a repository that a software installation group can use on an isolated LAN, far away from the temptations to apt-get the unneeded.

Sorry, I just found your question, 4 months late. Yes, I did get it to install. Without having to do anything special AFTER I got help from coworkers who knew hos to configure the BIOS and RAID and CONFIGURATION MANAGER. Maddeningly complicated. Once done it runs great!

comment No Soundcards found. Alsa disappeared?
Should I remove the latest kernel (2.6.32-44-generic) before reinstalling? Or just install over it? I am running kernel (latest - 1), (2.6.32-43-generic). All I need to do is to delete the "2.6.32-44" files in /root and do a grub-update, right?

Additional news: I rebooted and GRUB-selected my previous kernel. Sound works just fine. "modprobe snd-hda-intel" returns nothing. Knowing this, should I just apt-get a new kernel upgrade and clobber the previous kernel upgrade? Perhaps I should delete the last kernel upgrade? By deleting what?

$ modprobe snd-hda-intel FATAL: Module snd_hda_intel not found. Does not sound promising does it?
