comment How can I cd to a directory without writing its name?
Related to askubuntu.com/q/226417/41499. Also I'm surprised that nobody pointed you to autojump. With autojump you can simply type j d and it will take you to the a b c d directory. Check my answer to the linked question for more details: askubuntu.com/a/226431/41499

Are you using steam, then use support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1040-JWMT-2947, in case you're using the commandline wiki.winehq.org/…

comment How to install Canon printer/scanner drivers (deb.tar.gz file)?
This is indeed the correct way to do it, Canon packaged the deb files in a very confusing way!

comment How to install Canon printer/scanner drivers (deb.tar.gz file)?
Theoretically you're answer is correct, but the packagers at Canon fucked it up. They simply called their folder .deb and compressed it. It isn't a deb file :(

comment What is the equivalent to the Windows “Program Files” folder? (Where do things go when I install them?)
@iamcreasy In .desktop files you can add extra information, such as a description and an icon (see an example here: standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/apa.html), it's a 'regular' file. A symbolic link is a 'special' file that only links to another file. I find this hard to explain properly but maybe you can find a better answer here: superuser.com/questions/253935/…

@iamcreasy thanks! Yes, they are a sort of shortcut, but with the main intention of avoiding file copies. The windows shortcuts are more comparable to. desktop files, which can be used to create, for example, startmenu items.

comment Force file extension to open with specific app (Extensions like .exe, .jpg, .mp4…)
@doug you're right, but the question is about what to do if the application is not in that list (which happens a lot).

I have the LG34UM95-P (3440x1440) with a 780 Ti and it works flawlessly with the proprietary drivers, I don't know about the open source drivers.

comment Problem binding a shortcut to a function / multimedia key
Thanks for your comment, I looked into it and it appears udev will be merged into systemd and keymap settings will be managed in hwdb instead. According to bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168720 it is possible to extract findkeyboards from an older version of systemd, but I'm unsure the rest of the answer still applies...

If it can't be done on Ubuntu, that should be the answer. Marking the question as off-topic is wrong IMO. And in fact it can be done on Ubuntu (I'll post the answer when the question is reopened), so I'm voting to reopen.

Nice addition, but you might want to explain it more ;) (Also, letting newbies get into vi without warning? Ouch! :P)
