My computing experience dates back to the eighties when DOS was brand new and home machines ran on CP/M. From building my own systems I have some understanding in hardware and other complicated things but it is my believe that an OS has to be easy to use and to configure. That's why I use Ubuntu.

comment Can I create a launcher for keyboard shortcuts?
You may want to have a look at xdotool to complete your answer.

comment How to access the router UI when it's IP address says “the webpage is not available”? Its not just plug and play as in windows?
Two possible issues: 1. How is your router connected to your computer? Try with an Ethernet cable. 2. Did you disable IPv4 in Network Manager at any time? It only shows an IPv6 address for eth0.

comment problem in installation of ubuntu in virtualbox :(
The error you mention should only occur when booting a 64-bit kernel. Your Ubuntu .iso probably is 64-bit.

comment Installing Brother MFC scanner drivers, on Ubuntu after 12.04 / Status of Brother scaner support over USB?
This is only for the brscan driver for old to very old devices. These may be supported natively by Sane. Newer scanners are well supported by the native >= brscan2 drivers. Do you have any issues?

comment No audio over display port (adaptor) - hdmi
After Editing GRUB we also need a sudo update-grub and a reboot to work, but it obviously will only work on an ATI-card driven system. Please also do not put your user to the audio group (who told you you should)?

comment Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: Installed Ubuntu on latest Virtualbox 4.3.20. After login, I can only see blank screen. I am completely new to Ubuntu. What do I do?
Ubuntu/Unity will need >= 256 MB of video memory. You then also may want to install the guest additions.

comment Multiple desktop question, i.e. :0, :1
@NathanOsman: yeah in case the GPU supports it, or if we had more than one card it may work with multi-seat indeed... configuring it is a challenge. If like me we only occasionally need a desktop it may not be worth it ;)

@NiklasRosencrantz: yeah - it really confused me when reading but all I can say is that I never got it to work properly on my systems.

We should not recommend to install out-dated guest additions from the repositories to a newer Virtual Box release.

comment TestDisk installation
You need to enable the Universe repository and update your apt cache. See askubuntu.com/questions/286181/… - only use a live CD of a supported Ubuntu release (e.g. 14.04).

What is your host OS? There are no guest additions for MacOS.

comment How do I shrink a dynamically growing VDI disk from VirtualBox?
It may be easier and less time comsuming to just clone the VDI - but I have no experience with encryption, really.

comment How do I shrink a dynamically growing VDI disk from VirtualBox?
@smichak: that's the point of encryption. It will encrypt all of your drive to also make sure we can not see file boundaries.
