My computing experience dates back to the eighties when DOS was brand new and home machines ran on CP/M. From building my own systems I have some understanding in hardware and other complicated things but it is my believe that an OS has to be easy to use and to configure. That's why I use Ubuntu.

comment How to add program that is not installed via software center to launcher?
The message in your screenshot from your 2nd edit indicates an error in the .desktop file. Spot the error, remove it, and you will be able to run Eclipse from a .dektop file (which then can be dragged onto the laucher).

You may have a typo in your .desktop file then.

See askubuntu.com/questions/13758/… - you need to create a .desktop file for it.

What release version are you? IIRC Chromium processes may now have different names dependent on roles. See ps aux | grep chromium.

Depending on how slow your machine is you may still be able to run Virtual Box, it is not too picky on resources (dual core ~2 GHz 2 GB host should do for testing - not for performance of course)
