Yes @Dor, that did the trick for everything except chat. The symlink method seems not to work anymore. And the Chat item is still here...

comment How can I toggle between single and dual monitor setup?
Well then just use disper -s to activate only the primary display, or disper -S to activate only the secondary display

comment Is there a way that Unity can remember which terminal window had focus and was raised?
Thanks, but what happens if I have used a bunch of other apps before going back to the terminal? I have to hit alt-tab until my terminal is focused... No, I want to click to button in the launcher and have my terminal windows raise, and whichever one of them had focus put on top and given focus

comment What to use to quickly cut Audio/Video
Thanks for the helpful suggestion, but for what I need they are too complex. Note that I didn't say too difficult to use, just unnecessarily bloated for my purposes. I ended up using openshot

This one is also quite similar: askubuntu.com/q/18418/38 I tried all the steps listed without any success

thanks for all your help. When I say any application, that's because I haven't found an application in which links clicked open properly in firefox. I tried Hotot, Gwibber, ubuntu one, empathy, skype, and others. You solution sounded good but did not solve the problem unfortunately. I think my problem is the same as this question askubuntu.com/q/24051/38 only reversed...
