Everything does seem to indicate that exact problem. Well I guess it is a good thing that amazon cloud player still works. Thank you for your response.

The shared folder is a samba share. Security is set to everyone "full rights" - My windows machines, xbox, dvd player, can all see the share and stream music off the share. My laptop, I get a burst of static and then silence. The media player continues, it shows the album art, the bar is moving across the screen but no sound. If I copy the file to my local drive and try to play it there, everything works great.

comment Ubuntu Crashes, where do I look to fix it?
The crash I am having is not during boot. It boots up fine, I will be using ubuntu, and suddenly black screen with a ton of text about modules and panic and everything is locked up. I can't go to the console, I can't restart, I have to hold in the power button until it shuts off. I would think there would be a file somewhere that all that code was being written to that would say "This module failed" or something like that. Is there?
