comment How best to read the man pages?
less is used by default anyway. I am not sure the OP would gain anything by piping to more.

comment Will apt-get upgrade upgrade all my installed software?
@theowner997 It has nothing to do with signing. Some Unix and Linux users opt to compile programs from source code. Don't worry about it. If you really want to understand what that means you can follow the link I provided. help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo

@user226755 If you don't understand what that means don't worry, you haven't (compiled any from source). help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo

comment Where is usr/local?
You do not need to sudo to cd to /usr/local though you would not be able to edit the files. You do need root privileges for editing but the files are visible as a reugular user.

comment How can I change my command line (bash) prompt?
What you are suggesting would change the user name (and create a new user, which he may not want), not change the hostname.

comment How to complete uninstall git from Ubuntu Desktop 12.04?
I am not sure why you want him to erase the .git folder. His individual git config --global are also in his /home/user/.gitconfig file.

@mikewhatever I just noticed that he is asking about Xandros, which per our current guidelines IS off topic.

comment Couldn't find package dd
@mikewhatever dd is part of the default Ubuntu install being part of coreutils. How is this off topic???! Informing the OP that dd is probably already installed (and explaining that dd is part of coreutils) and guiding him on how to use it is the correct approach to this question not closing it as off topic!

comment Installing the most recent version of the Z shell
Don't worry about it and just install (or keep) the zsh version on the Ubuntu repository. Most of us can not tell the difference, if any, between one minor version of our favorite shell and another. And yes, I do use zsh as my default shell.

comment Startup commands with zsh as default shell?
I don't think your question is very clear. What are you trying to run at login. I do agree with the answer from "The Lord of Time" to not worry about it; but I am not positive since I am not clear what you are trying to run at login.

comment Safe remove of grub and lilo instead?
While it is more primitive than Grub, sometimes that works out as a plus. I certainly would not describe it as "woefully inferior". On one of my machines with multiple distributions Grub2 is so messed up it is unusable except for a single distribution and I wasted 2 days trying to fix it. LILO on the other hand works beautifully and allows me to access all of the distributions on that disk.

comment How to create a permanent “alias”?
@ændrük I actually find the profusion of shell config files confusing. In my mind it is easier if there is one fairly long config file with all the settings.

comment How to default terminal startup?
@MartinOrda With the wink and your background I suspect you know this, but a newbie may take you literally. It would be dangerous to edit such a critical file as the bootloader config file with a word processor.

@DavidKohen I do wish to increase the screen resolution but keep the font as is (i.e. small).

The original poster is trying to work from the terminal and it is often quicker to work from the terminal.

comment Which Ubuntu distribution should I install on this laptop?
While I don't think he would gain anything from installing a 64 bit kernel/distribution, the processor does appear to be 64 bit capable and can handle either.

@de1337ed You may have created it as root or had root privileges at the time.
