comment Pipable command to print in color?
If you really want to do an executable file though, you should copy everything from within the function (inside the brackets) and put in a file "colorize", mark it as executable and put it in some directory in your $PATH variable (/usr/local/bin is a good place)

You can just copy the function to your .bashrc.

comment Add bash script folder to path?
you won't be able to do it with bash foo.sh, but with foo.sh, after giving exec permission and putting them in the $PATH.

In this case, since it's scripts from an applications, I'd advise to put symbolic links for the scripts in the ~/bin, for better maintainability.

comment How do I force a secure reboot?
I believe it's safer to do the sequence REISUB (that's reversed BUSIER), since it flushes fs data AFTER killing the user programs.

comment Where can I find the man page for the set command?
when in doubt, always do type COMMAND to see if you are using the command or a shell-builtin function. When it is a builtin, help COMMAND | pager will give you the help with a cool pager. :)

comment Is it preferred to avoid use of “exit” in bash scripts as much as possible?
actually, using exit would be a recommended practice. in the abs-guide, for example, most scripts ends with exit 0.

Yeah, if mplayer can't play the mp4, then the conversion won't work with this method. :/

And does the audiodump.wav plays? If it doesn't, mplayer couldn't play the video.mp4 file, and then you're really out of luck. Maybe the file you are trying to convert is corrupted, can you test the process with another file?

that's weird... it seems that lame couldn't convert the wav. try removing the >/dev/null 2>/dev/null from the code to see the error message.
