I've been using Linux for +10 years. Lately focusing on binary distributions like Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, but I've spent enough years in Gentoo to know my way around compiling kernels and bootstraping machines the hard way. The more I know , the more I know I dont know. So I stick around to teach, and to learn :)

what GFX card are you using in X? xvinfo |grep Adaptor , will tell you which one is in use by X. Also do you disable the other card?

could you run sudo dmidecode |grep -i MacBook so we know what version of mac you have? Also are you running it in efi mode?

As the link in the post describes you boot the kernel directly from refind bypassing grub entirely. I've updated the post with a link for a detailed efi install faq answering the black screen issue

If you like rsync, use rsnapshot. Its uses rsync and hardlinks to allow versioning. I use it to sync terrabytes of data on a daily basis
