Thanks for the suggestion! I have posted the steps in the original question for an explicit answer.

comment How can I direct gnome-tweak-tool to list extensions alphabetically?
Thank you for providing a way! I need to study python. That worked excellently. I'm set... until the next update to the tweak tool! lol

comment Is it possible to assign a keyboard shortcut to cause the Looking Glass to appear?
lg is internal to Alt-F2. When I say that it is not a command, I am referring to the fact that one cannot go to a plain terminal (i.e., console) and type lg. There is no command file which executes in response to that entry on the command line.

I don't see how this answers my question. Technically, there is no lg command. If there were, it'd be a cinch using the technique described.

comment How paranoid should I be that the automatic package manager mechanism is going to remove packages that I use?
That worked perfectly. I actually did an apt-get install on most of the packages. I use most of them. This has saved me a great deal of effort as I am on a tether-only hookup and things cost me plenty (time and/or money)! You explain things excellently and are extremely valuable to the community.

That was an excellent explanation! Thank you very much. Yes, last night I had deleted gnome-screensaver (which required me to also remove the gnome and gnome-core metapackages) in order to overcome gnome-screensaver's defiance on my running xscreensaver... long story... anyway, this is what has led to the current state. I will do an aptitude keep-all. It would have taken me many moons to figure out what you have taught me with your answer. I am grateful to you and to AskUbuntu!

Beautiful. The 2nd approach did work without a flaw. Thank you for steering me towards the article on meta packages.

I will continue with the 2nd approach... don't seem to have a choice. It's comforting to know that those metapackages are not the real deal.

Yes, I have done that (disabled gnome-screensaver and enabled xscreensaver). However, after rebooting and logging in, gnome-screensaver has been started! Although gnome-session-properties reports that it is disabled.

So this can be deleted... (But I'm not sure how to do that.)

comment How do i fix my keyboard mapping?
So, I went to a console and tried to reproduce the problem. But failed. This led me to realize that it was specific to the X environment. After digging around, I realized it was due to settings in my .xbindkeysrc.scm file!

comment What are the differences between “GTK theme” and “Window theme” in tweak tools?
Not at all a duplicate. I understand that themes vary among the different windows managers... What I am trying to figure out is the difference within a specific environment. For example, I have Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome 3, Gnome Shell. This is what I use daily. I have two tools: Advanced Settings (aka gnome-tweak-tool) and Ubuntu Tweak. I'm interested in exploring various themes. With either tool, on its corresponding theme tab it refers to "Window theme" as well as "GTK theme." I do not know which setting will affect which presentation...

comment How can I enable Gnome Shell Extensions with Ubuntu 11.10?
Yes, it starts. The messages are displayed while starting... but, from the Shell Extensions panel, only User Themes Extension and Applications Menu Extension are usable. The other 9 extensions have an error (orange) icon displayed and they are disabled. The screen looks just the same as displayed in the attached link: askubuntu.com/questions/76072/…
