comment How to use SQL in terminal?
Actually, the syntax you specified only connects to the specified database, it doesn't create it. You'll have to first connect without specifying a database and run CREATE DATABASE [dbname]. Furthermore, if you specify the password on the command line (not recommended, the syntax is mysql -u user_name -ppassword database, without the space between p and your password. You can also omit the password here and MySQL will prompt you for it, which is safer.

Open a terminal and type dmesg right after plugging in the drive, and a few of the last lines should have information on the device detection. Or you can copy/paste the whole output (censor if needed) on Pastebin and share the link here.

Could you paste/link the relevant part of dmesg output from when you plug in or mount the drive?

comment Linux Batch File Similar to Windows Batch File (for backing up a database)
It's not a backup, it's an import (has <instead of >). The SQL file is loaded into the specified database.

comment How does my sys admin know that I haven't rebooted my system?
I doubt that this is the case, because the user would have to reboot twice if the updates require a reboot after installing, and if there are no updates that require a reboot, the sysadmin could just remotely run that same script and update in the background. Without knowing more, I'd guess that there was a kernel image upgrade (or something other requiring a reboot), and the user had to reboot to apply the new kernel. But this is just guesswork.

@Salem Exactly, it doesn't open any windows or show an icon in the status bar (or notification area, or whatever it's called).

Can't get Jupiter to show up at all even after whitelisting all apps, and caused random slowdowns, had to uninstall.

Tried it quickly, but couldn't get it to run. Will try again after work.

I thought that might be the reason why it doesn't work, too bad. And yeah, it's as fast as I can expect with this hardware, running with the defaults (unity-3d) on 11.10.
