Also you may want to download the installation iso and use it instead. I think during installation you have the option to upgrade existing Ubuntu versions.

Also post the output of cat /etc/default/grub. From the error message it seems there is something wrong there.

comment Mysterious .directories in my home directory
Just to complement saiarcot895 answer: they begin with a dot because that makes the directory hidden. You can see them in file explorer pressing Ctrl+H (again to disable) and in termial using ls -la for example instead of ls

How did you run it in Windows? Using IDLE? Usually to run a python program you run python /path/to/script.py in a terminal, but there are many other options.

In this case I already knew this was the package you needed. When you don't find an exact match you can search for packages using apt-cache (ex: apt-cache search libcairo).

Are you using some driver for that card? (Search for "Additional drivers" in the dash). This answer of a similar question says installing nvidia current helps (in your case it seems you are using Nouveau)

comment Need to delete packages from '/boot' directory
No prob. The space should be enough. A new kernel should only take ~30MB in /boot (a lot of other files will be installed in your root partition, which has plenty of space).
