it sounds like you may've accidentally removed Unity or compiz? If you can sign in on tty1 (ctrl-alt-f1), try to sudo apt-get --reinstall ubuntu-desktop if that doesn't work, it's possible you corrupted Unity settings, which you can restore to default with unity --reset
