comment How to set Ubuntu to synchronize my clock with a time server?
Ah, silly me, forgetting about the internationalization. My en-us system labels it "Time and Date".

Isn't it labeled "Time and Date"?

You're welcome. I'll add it as a response, then. :)

Questions are always welcome here, but you might find this useful: commandlinefu.com lists a bunch of commands and tricks for use in the shell, and it has lots of stuff about text-file manipulation.

comment What protocol does Empathy's “People Nearby” use, and what other chat programs use it?
Or, in other words, Apple's implementation of Zeroconf is called [Bonjour](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software%29) and the implementation used by Ubuntu is called [Avahi](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avahi_(software%29).

I also found this page (last updated July 19, 2007) that might still be current enough to help you out.

I'm pretty sure Gnome-do depends on what's set in the gnome-terminal.desktop file.

I agree with Erigami. He doesn't update it very often and he doesn't help much with learning about Ubuntu. However, it is useful for getting the occasional update on what direction Ubuntu is headed in.

Ubuntu Universe is almost the same thing (even found at the same domain), except it also includes posts by these bloggers that aren't about Ubuntu or its derivatives. I don't think there's any Ubuntu-related material there not already posted on the main Ubuntu Weblogs site.

Several of the blogs listed in this community wiki are aggregated by Planet Ubuntu, including the Canonical Design Blog, Mark Shuttleworth's blog, Full Circle Magazine (Ronnie Tucker), Ubuntu Linux Tips & Tricks (Mackenzie Morgan), The Fridge, and Jono Bacon. It's a good source for finding blogs to subscribe to even if you don't want to subscribe to Planet Ubuntu itself.

It's less about learning technical stuff (like programming or system administration) and more about discovery and having fun with Ubuntu (like themes, design ideas, and new apps). OMG! Ubuntu! is not without its own share of controversy; people seem to either like it or hate it.

comment Why does every window fade when I rotate the desktop cube?
I think the plugin that controls this is the Fade plugin. You'll need the Compiz Settings Manager to set the delay for fading to a longer period.

That sounds like the default way for Ubuntu to display an application isn't responding (when visual effects are activated). Rotating the cube might be taking enough resources on your computer that it's causing all the running applications to freeze up while waiting for resources to be available.
