As my post says, I installed wicd which fixed my problem, but I apparently didn't have network-manager in the first place but I don't understand how that could be the case because very occasionally it would work and connect.

So if I have a logical volume across two physical extents without striping, does it just choose where to put the files behind the scenes? Hmm, I think I might just keep / on the SSD and /home where it is on the HDD.

Hmm, I should point out that Windows uses 80GB of my SSD (don't shoot me, I want my games to start up fast lol. Ubuntu is for work) so I've really only got abotu 35GB for Ubuntu. Still plenty for / at the least I think, but I'll probably keep /home on the hard drive. But your link about striped LVs is very helpful, I'll give it a good read through.
