comment Ubuntu 14.04 taking a lot of time to start
Right, so there's no sysctl command for that? I just recall /proc isn't like most root directories, and not all files can just be edited. (though wouldn't it be great if I could just edit /proc/meminfo like that and add more memory hehe)

How would you tweak perf_cpu_time_max_percent? I see it listed in /proc/sys/kernel/perf_cpu_time_max_percent but don't imagine one should edit that file. Does this involve tweaking the kernel directly?

comment HDMI is not displayed in the “Sound” settings on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Not sure why you suggest installing NVIDIA binaries -- nothing in the Oso's question seems to suggest this is an NVIDIA card. I believe the Dell he describes, the XPS M1330, has integrated Intel GMA graphics (cnet.com/products/dell-xps-m1330/specs)

comment Laggy/jumpy/erratic bluetooth mouse in Ubuntu 15.04
This impacts me as well -- I lose the bluetooth connection entirely on the new dell xps-13-dev edition, ubuntu 15.04, after suspend. Toggling bluetooth off and on (Fn+PrtScr) seems to bring bluetooth back up.

comment Upgrade to 15.04 breaks deja dup backups to Amazon S3?
Note that this same error also occurs when using duplicity directly with Amazon S3. Also note that installing the latest boto using pip install instead of apt-get still does not resolve the issue.

@Jan Yes, python-boto is installed; and yes, other backup methods work fine.

comment How do I encrypt an external (USB) hard drive in 14.04?
@bodhi.zazen Right, I just meant to point out that this is not a duplicate of a dependency problem because the user has already installed the software, the said software just has a different name.

comment How to encrypt external devices?
@Pabi Thanks for the detailed answer but this doesn't seem to reflect the changes to gnome-disk-utility for Ubuntu 14.04. The interface is rather different; this closely matches the 12.04 directions. In 14.04, disk utility has been renamed "disks", and lacks a lot of these options as far as I can tell.

@bodhi.zazen This isn't a duplicate of the issue you link; the disk utility is now called "disks" on 14.04 and doesn't have the options described in the thread the user links.

I've encountered this same issue. The GUI Disk-Utility has been overhauled rather drastically and no longer has the encryption options listed by that documentation (or most other documentation for this task that I can find).

comment vim struggles when copy-pasting large blocks of text in from an external window
Because I feel that Jim's answer is correct, this is a bug. There's no reason one should need to turn syntax highlighting off for a simple copy-paste to work smoothly like it does in gedit, etc. Just seems that the bug depends on the syntax highlighter extension, not base vim.

comment advice for debugging apport-gpu-error-intel.py crashes?
ironically, I haven't experienced it recently. Didn't change anything explicitly to fix it. Maybe a recent update addressed this, maybe just chance?

Yup! I think the bounty didn't go through first time I clicked on it, thanks for following up.

comment Can I use Amazon Glacier as the backup location?
Thanks for sharing, but why not upload directly to Glacier? It sounds like your configuration requires paying the cost of keeping a current copy of everything backed up on S3 as well, with its much higher rates.

Awesome, thanks! I wonder why this list is different than the one provided in the Network Applet GUI?

comment LESS CSS compilers returning blank
Just a brilliant answer, thanks for the careful explanation. Everything is working now as it should. Not sure how I managed to get a dud version of the npm less installed, but I caution on not mixing similar distro & compiled packages is well noted. It is a pity that it's often not possible to rely only on distro packages though, particularly in with ruby, etc.

comment How do I remove obsolete Network entries from Network Connection Applet
Yeah, that's my current solution in a poor connectivity area. However, I usually do not get prompted unless I have attempted to connect to that network before. If I have connected successfully, I can delete it from the list and not get prompted about it. My question is about where to find the record for networks that do not show up there but are clearly memorized by the machine. The record file must exist somewhere
