comment No HDMI output Nvidia 331 driver
Oh yes I tried different cables. The monitor was detected, but unfortunately no image was shown. But I'm now using another computer, which hopefully I'll have more luck with. Failing that, it's back to Win 10 :(

Score one for Windows on this occasion ;-)

@abelinux I've actually given up on this. The machine has a hybrid graphics card, which just does not want to work properly with Ubuntu. I tried everything to get it working, but no joy. :-(

Beautiful! Works like a charm if you can't get the webapps-service to install. Thanks.

@thesdog go here packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/unity-webapps-service. Download the deb package, and unpack using the instructions in the post below by mchid.

comment Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears
Thanks! This really dug me out of a hole. Just to add that if like me, Unity had lost the ability to run a terminal with ctlr+alt+t, then just type ctrl+alt+F1, and drop into a command line screen, log in and follow the instructions given in this answer. Good luck!

Thanks mate. Looks like you have to bin Unity and I don't want to do that. Also seems quite complicated and I'm not sure it's guaranteed to work on a connected TV too, which is part of why I wanted to get this working. Oh well, looks like Windows has scored one over Ubuntu, for this particular point.

comment Unable to switch to Nvidia 331 graphics driver
Ok, maybe I'll take this to pieces over the weekend. From past experience the cooling fan is not easy to get to. Can you think of anything else which could be causing this massive slow down? I've read that disabling VSync helps.

comment Unable to switch to Nvidia 331 graphics driver
This laptop is pretty old, could well be gunked up, but I really don't have time to take it to pieces. Plus some other strange things happened after I switched to Nvidia, like Wine didn't work, which I just can't live without. I had to re-install it. So back to Intel it is for me. Oh well, it was nice for a fleeting moment to have full 3D power.

Thanks. You're answer worked, but now when running with the Nvidia driver enabled, the machine slows down to a crawl, and becomes very hot. I've had to switch back to Intel mode.

I'm getting exactly the same problem. Installed the 331 proprietary driver, but can't switch to it.

Also note that after a kernel update, you will have to follow the above procedure to insert the driver module into the kernel.

Many thanks for this, it was a driver problem. I downloaded the official driver from the Realtek website, after looking at this page. Followed the instructions there and it solved my problem. unixblogger.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/… Thanks once again!
