I'm Jamie, I'm studying Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester School of Physics and Astronomy. I've been running Ubuntu since about 9.04 but I've used other distributions in between. I'm hoping to become a physics teacher soon, but I'm taking a year out before starting training.

comment why I can't change my screen resolution?
@Shahbaz.krk you might be missing a proprietary graphics driver, but I don't know how to install them on elementary. Post some info about what graphics card you have

Right, I just needed to run sudo usermod -aG fuse pi (where pi is the username on my raspberry pi) and also exec su -l $USER. This has fixed everything. (Perhaps add that to your answer)

I've sort of worked around it. I changed some permissions and rebooted and now if I run sudo -i in the terminal I can run the command and it all works. Sort of. Still need to be root though, can't seem to get on without that

I can get ssh to work but not sshfs. It says: failed to open /dev/fuse or if I run with sudo: device not found, try 'modprobe fuse' first

@Jos Oh no, it is working now. Just a broken HDMI cable apparently. Wow, I wish I'd have asked this sooner, this stuff is awesome!

@Jos this looks like the exact solution I was looking for. I think the HDMI out is broken on my pi atm so I'm going to order a new one I think, unless there's something better/cheaper that you (or anyone) can recommend.

@saiarcot895 could you add this as an answer so I can follow your steps and see if they work for me?

comment When you uninstall a program on Ubuntu, does the software leave any residue?
Not sure, maybe for the subjective remarks like: "laziness of the software creator", " leaving files and configuration settings is a bit more frowned upon in the Linux world" but I thought it was an ok answer.

@NGRhodes I've read that too. Perhaps I'm asking this in the wrong place, I didn't think I'd get an answer.

@Danatela It's nice to know that our friendly rivals at Microsoft are useless when it comes to security, but I'd really like to know about Ubuntu, and if security bugs like this going unnoticed for so long means I can't say open source software is inherently secure
