Been a part-time linux user since the 0.9.x days, mostly RedHat and more recently Ubuntu.

I'm the senior software developer and also the computer "catch-all" guy at our small company. I generally write in C for Windows, but have dabbled with writing C for linux and misc www scripting languages. I set up and maintain the company's extern internet (and internal file) servers.

I'm currently very frustrated after my recent "upgrade" from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10. Still trying to find all of the things that were broken or changed enough that they may as well be called broken. At least I don't have any GUI stuff to wade through!

Thanks! I wish I'd known about that back when I needed it. I'm not trying to belittle your reply, it is just that the problem went away after I went through the upgrade process to 12.04 -- with no change to my /etc/network/interfaces files. But if it returns, I'll definitely give this a try.

The auth.log from the last boot (Nov 28) just shows that sshd was listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22, then received signal 15 and terminated, and then was listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22 again. All three of those messages were logged in the SAME SECOND. So there's no error being logged there. I suspect that Ubuntu is doing something BETWEEN starting sshd and the next step that is not being logged and whatever it is takes TWO FULL MINUTES.

boot.log doesn't contain any time tags (or anything indicating possible errors) so it was no help and syslog doesn't go back far enough. When I am next able to boot the machine, I'll try to remember to take a look to see if there is anything there.

There seems to be no way to have code in comments, or at least the backticks and four leading spaces, and two trailing spaces things in the docs aren't working for me. The previous message is the requested few lines from dmesg.

In dmesg the pause comes just after the two network cards are activated and ssh terminated (don't know why that would be): (in next comment because too few characters are allowed in each)
