comment Problem cloning root and home before doing an upgrade from Trusty to Utopic
When grub boots it needs to load stuff from a filesystem on a partition - so unless you have a separate /boot partition you will have two copies. And running update-grub from a running OS will only update the one copy in the current /boot dir. I'm also not sure if /sda[5..] can be set as bootable - it is in an extended partition (sda[1..4] are primary, bootable partitions). It may help (or may not) to know that you can run update-grub on the other OS by way of chroot + mount -t bind commands.

comment How to get Calibri font to display nicely
The last tip worked! As for layout, I'm talking about word docs etc. that others send me (therefore I have no control over their creation). Anyway, thanks for the great answer.

Wow love the gif video! Well, yes, I can use that file to turn off antialiasing for ALL fonts, but the question is how to turn it ON for Calibri. Your other solution (uninstalling Calibri) is not what I'm after either because different fonts have different spacings, so changing font messes up layout and pagination.

I've added that info to my question - not sure what to do in the conf.avail/ file?

@seth Happy Christmas! Um, well I kinda just looked through the file for something that sounded related. disk-full was a bit of a give-away ;-)

Is that last BrowserMatch line supposed to read [17-9]? Looks like it should be [7-9] (or even [7-99] if we're assuming ie can only get better)?
