I'm currently a graduate student with a B.E.Sc in Electrical Engineering, working towards a M.E.Sc in Robotics & Control Systems. My research involves implementation of computer vision algorithms, in parallel and in hardware, for real-time robotics. In my studies, I focused mostly on computer architectures, embedded systems, image processing, and parallel processing/GPGPU. For now, I'm just enjoying school, updating my website when I can, working on various projects (like PySceneDetect), slaving away on my thesis/research, and of course, contributing to Stack Exchange!

If you should need to contact me directly, leave a comment on this page and I will e-mail you back.

(Extensive) Experienced with Linux / Windows, assembly (x86 & m68k), C/C++, Python, VBA, C#, MATLAB, SDL, GTK+ / Glade, Qt, OpenGL, OpenCV, CUDA, SQL, SQLAlchemy, OpenCL, and VHDL / Verilog.

Does the menu itself keep flickering when the volume is under 60%?

It seems like the "flickering" is the sound card rapidly detecting you inserting/removing an output device from your front audio port (the "headphone" jack). Try leaving a device stuck in the front port. Does this "flickering" between devices still occur when you set the system output level below 60% as you've said, or does that only resolve the audible flicker? As a quick solution, you might want to investigate forcing a particular output channel for your system's audio (i.e. disabling automatic detection when plugging a pair of headphones/speakers in).

comment How do I fix my locale issue?
This is the best answer. It's not that my locales were setup incorrectly, but they didn't actually exist. I think this is similar to the OP's problem as well ("No such file or directory" is pretty clear if your locale is set right!).

comment How to change the date format?
+1 just for the "Then you need to tell the indicator which format to use. This has to be done in a format understood by the strftime function. You can look it up here." - I wasn't sure what format strings they were using, and found that reference awesome. Thanks!

comment USB drive install of Ubuntu 12.04 Server fails - can't find components from CD-ROM
I just tried this method, and it does indeed work, so +1 for that... However, I wouldn't call this the solution, as there's clearly a problem with either the Ubuntu disc image or the Universal USB Installer program.

comment How do I uninstall GRUB?
Can you dump the raw MBR data and post it here? You should be able to do something like sfdisk -d /dev/sdb > sdb.out.

Do not do this. The first command will wipe out the partition table (as the OP mentioned), but the second command will cause undefined behaviour if the MBR is not configured properly.
