comment Unity environment way too slow in Ubuntu 13.10
I have the same problem with Dash and no tweaks helped rendering it faster. One thing which does help is using Super + A instead of just Super to open applications. I like Unity but due to this slowness I moved to Gnome 3 for the time being and am loving it.

comment Synapse does not show folders
The one description of the plugin says "Open commonly used directories", so it probably depends on Zeitgeist.

It might be a hardware issue. Try testing a live system and run memtest. These might give you clues to discover the cause.

Try to increase the brightness. On one occasion I had a similar situation. The monitor was on but at zero brightness.

comment Fix “WiFi Disabled by hardware switch” in Kubuntu 14.04
The extreme solution is to find a Windows disc (or download one) and unblock the wifi. You could then burn a DVD, launch the installer and maybe before it starts copying files, you will hav the opportunity to unblock the wifi.

Try going in Bios settings. There is a wi-fi communications setting. Check if it is on.

You can create a separate ext4 partition on your HDD and move & mount the Linux folders there.

How did you burn the DVD? Did you simply copy the iso to the DVD or burn the image to the DVD?

What do you mean with "downloading Ubuntu to DVD"? You need to download the file and then burn the .iso to a DVD or create a live USB with it.
