comment Ubuntu very slow
Live USB is mainly there to try if everything works and to launch the installation. It is normal that it's slower than a normally installed system. On the other hand you may need to install a proprietary video driver to make things faster if you have an Nvidia or ATI video adapter.

comment Can't install 14.04 (32bit) dual boot with Windows 7
The reasons why you do not get the "Install alongside Windows" could vary. While trying Ubuntu, open a terminal and type sudo fdisk -l. This will tell us if you already have too many primary partitions (max. 4).

Reboot and there should be an entry for your ISO. Choose it and it should boot it.

comment Dell XPS 13 Ivybridge, turns off randomly when on battery
75% of original capacity after 1.5 years seems low to me but that depends on how you use it. It is recommend it to discharge it completely once a month.

comment problem with Gnome and how to upgrade it
Upgrading to Gnome 3.12 before upgrading to Ubuntu 14.10 is not necessary. It actually increases risk of having problems during the upgrade.

Try acpi -ib or upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0

comment Dell XPS 13 Ivybridge, turns off randomly when on battery
The battery might be at fault here. Sometimes batteries fail this way; instead of degrading slowly, they start acting up by losing power all of a sudden. How old is it?
