comment Dell XPS 13 Ivybridge, turns off randomly when on battery
75% of original capacity after 1.5 years seems low to me but that depends on how you use it. It is recommend it to discharge it completely once a month.

comment problem with Gnome and how to upgrade it
Upgrading to Gnome 3.12 before upgrading to Ubuntu 14.10 is not necessary. It actually increases risk of having problems during the upgrade.

Try acpi -ib or upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0

The battery might be at fault here. Sometimes batteries fail this way; instead of degrading slowly, they start acting up by losing power all of a sudden. How old is it?

comment Unity environment way too slow in Ubuntu 13.10
I have the same problem with Dash and no tweaks helped rendering it faster. One thing which does help is using Super + A instead of just Super to open applications. I like Unity but due to this slowness I moved to Gnome 3 for the time being and am loving it.

comment Synapse does not show folders
The one description of the plugin says "Open commonly used directories", so it probably depends on Zeitgeist.

comment Ubuntu 14.04 / 14.10 is crashing on me
It might be a hardware issue. Try testing a live system and run memtest. These might give you clues to discover the cause.

comment What is wrong with my monitor?
Try to increase the brightness. On one occasion I had a similar situation. The monitor was on but at zero brightness.

It's sad that Ubuntu cannot unblock hard blocked Wi-fi while Windows can.

The extreme solution is to find a Windows disc (or download one) and unblock the wifi. You could then burn a DVD, launch the installer and maybe before it starts copying files, you will hav the opportunity to unblock the wifi.

Try going in Bios settings. There is a wi-fi communications setting. Check if it is on.
