comment How to PXE boot a UEFI client with NFS rootfs?
This still doesn't answer my question, as what I'm really looking for is a working elilo.conf example, assuming elilo is the best thing to use here. Also, the newer ISC DHCP server isn't strictly needed for PXE booting UEFI clients... it's only needed if you need to support both UEFI and legacy BIOS clients from the same DNS server.

Although I haven't tried this in /etc/rc.local, when I've tried booting into a system with a read-only root partition, the boot hung pretty early on. So I don't think you'd make it to /etc/rc.local. I think you have to do this in an initramfs script.

comment Is there a modern equivalent of python-vm-builder?
Thanks! This looks like the sort of thing I'm looking for. And this environment isn't for a desktop system, BTW. I'm building something a bit like the MAAS ephemeral environment. It needs to be more comprehensive than say Ubuntu core alone, but I'd like it to be quite a bit smaller than a minimal Ubuntu server install.

Thanks! Although I could probably do what I want with Cobbler, it seems way overkill for what I'm aiming for. I don't want a provisioning service (and the complexities that brings), just a very simple provisioning tool. I'm looking for something higher level than debootstrap, but still a single-use command line or API tool.

So I haven't quite got it working with NFS yet, but in Quantal and newer, there is this intriguing overlayroot package: packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=overlayroot
