This only fixes it for the current session. After a reboot that directory will be gone.

Yes, that is what I did. I read somewhere, that getting the grub command line may mean I have legacy grub, so I'm trying again with a 9.04 live disc.

@kuoshik, I restored GRUB using grub-install (/boot partition) /dev/sda but when I boot I get a grub command line (i.e. Grub > ), and I don't know what to do.
