comment Failed to download repository information updates for 14.10
Actually I never set the server manually. Ubuntu did that service for me. I was quite happy that it chose a server in Israel since that could be one hop away instead of 20. I just tried an update and it failed to reach the repository so I agreed to send an error report. Then I changed to the main server and my computer got updated with no errors. If I knew who was responsible for the server in Tel Aviv, I would contact him.

comment my computer is crashing and I think it is overheating
Your giving me the sudo nvclock allowed me to confirm the fact. The computer is 4-5 years old and I need it compilations of c++ and java. My heaviest disply activity is displaying a movie. I suspect the crashes destroyed a couple of sectors on disk. In short, I don't spend new money to fix an old computer. I need something which works without giving me troubles.

Just in case someone else comes across the problem the nvclock and the PCI adapter in sensors are reporting the same thing. I tracked it after the computer was off for 2 hours and the numbers were always within 1 deg from each other.

Just to tell you that you are right. I bought some heat conduction material to make a better connection to the heat sink. Did it help? Of course not. In parallel I got some disk errors. Enough is enough, I bought a new computer.

I thought I had tried that. It does have an improvement: 'code' nouveau-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: +74.0°C (high = +95.0°C, hyst = +3.0°C) (crit = +122.0°C, hyst = +2.0°C) (emerg = +135.0°C, hyst = +5.0°C) ilan@ilan-main:~$ sudo nvclock -T Xlib: extension "NV-CONTROL" missing on display ":0". nVidia Geforce 9300GS => GPU temperature: 75C 'code'. Note that nouveau-pci-0100 has a temperature within 1 degree. Are these the same things?

Thanks. That was my typo, under pressure, when I forgot the Ctrl.

I do agree that it was probably the display card - I have 2 monitors and need a display card. So I will mark your answer as correct even if it was a hardware problem and not a software problem. Again, I really do appreciate the help.

The problem in the end was pure hardware. Like people with clogged arteries, computers suffer from dust. It crashed twice again this morning and the second time I didn't use Firefox. It still crashed. This is hardware. I took apart my computer vacuumed everything. I took out the memory and display card, cleaned them and used Servisol spray. Since I am replying to the question, it means that something worked.

What a dumb mistake! I meant to click 14.04 and I clicked 13.04 instead. I always use the latest version.
