comment ubuntu 14.04 - Samba - How to share from another drive?
What is media/media? On my machine I have media/Ilan, i.e. media/user name. Inside ilan is the disk on key, or whatever.

comment How do I change the scrolling mode in Evince?
In LibreOffice you can change the contents, whereas Evince is read only. The caret shows the point where the change can be made, which doesn't make sense if the document is read only. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for or not.

comment Inspiron 5520 (originally ubuntu). Seller had changed to Win7. I want to go UBUNTU. Pls Help
Are your problems in windows or problems because of which the seller changed from ubuntu to windows? I have always used the Ubuntu on usb from which I would first check the hardware is running and then install. ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

comment Having problems booting my Lenovo laptop
Since the BIOS bothered me I asked another question askubuntu.com/questions/654014/… which basically solved the problem. Version 3.19.0-20 did report some sort of boot error on which I think I sent off one of those anonymous bug reports. In fixing the problem 3.19.0-20 was one of the kernels I happily deleted, so I can no longer test it. I looked for a disk test in BIOS and found none so I looked at the program disk which gave me size info: 99MB, 18GB, 481GB, 999MB, 1.1MB. I am always most glad to help.

comment Can I delete my most recent kernels
Then came the moment of truth. I did a reboot and first tried a manual choice of which kernel to use. To my delight the highest kernel was 3.19.0-18 which I used. Then I tried a boot with no intervention and again it booted. The mission had been accomplished. Finally I asked for the updater to give me the latest software. No new kernels were loaded but it booted again with no problems. Now uname -r shows I am using 3.19.0-25 so the update changed something, which is a bit surprising, but so long as it works, who cares? So thanks again for your help, and I prefer the GUI of synaptic to c.l.

First of all thanks for the answer. Second my problem is solved. I kind of knew what had to be done but it was very scary to do without a second opinion. You gave me the courage to go ahead. The only place which I differed from your suggestion was in the command line. In my case the terminal output was messy and I didn't want typos in manually removing things of such importance. I preferred to use synaptic which showed me in green what was installed and in white what wasn't. (I prefer to use GUI instead of command line.) In any case I marked for complete removal the image and the header.

I see I need more room so I'll continue to ask here. What is a mystery is if the BIOS is at fault why does dropping back to an old version of the kernel work? I would expect that the BIOS would be constant across all kernels. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place for unused boot managers. I didn't see any at all. I have my disk with 2 partitions: one "/" and the other "home". I see 2 entries for the hard disk, presumably for the 2 partitions. If you can give me some more direction and give me a guess why old kernels work, I would be very grateful.

First and foremost thanks for taking the time to answer. The problem is not yet solved. I went into the BIOS under the tab where I change the boot order and used F9 to set to defaults. After that I saw no change. I wanted to make sure I could boot from a disk on key to get the original Ubuntu download. I had to change the EFI boot order so the disk on key had priority, but I can boot from the disk on key.

In the meantime I filed a bug report bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-dropbox/+bug/1453655. The bug was confirmed and the cause was determined.

comment Failed to download repository information updates for 14.10
Actually I never set the server manually. Ubuntu did that service for me. I was quite happy that it chose a server in Israel since that could be one hop away instead of 20. I just tried an update and it failed to reach the repository so I agreed to send an error report. Then I changed to the main server and my computer got updated with no errors. If I knew who was responsible for the server in Tel Aviv, I would contact him.
