comment Can't find the Network Connections icon in my GNOME Classic systray
@fossfreedom - this one does not work. When I do this, I get the menu "Mute"/"Sound Preferences", which is the same for just doing right-click or any combo including the Win key.

@BrunoPereira - you're a little trigger happy... ;-) Give me a chance to settle this issue to the end...

@fossfreedom - so I read it through but I can't figure out how to configure the applet or how to remove the old volume control icon.

@fossfreedom - maybe... Yes. It seems to add the missing icons. However, now I have an extra volume control icon that was there before the applet was installed. How do I remove this one, and where can I configure the indicator applet?

comment How to close multiple gnome-terminals?
@MarkRooney - I am a big supporter of upvoting answers of some usefulness, but in this case (reading my own comments, as it was a long time ago and my memory is not that good), it seems like none really helped, hence my (non)vote. The answers certainly bare good info, but totally not helpful here.

@BlueXrider - Although I am no longer disturbed by this problem, obviously the question was not answered. The way I see it, it is still open.

comment How to assign “back” and “forward” actions to Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX' horizontal scroll wheel?
In the log files I see no trapping of the required mouse actions. Same as with xev, where I see the left and right buttons events, as well as the scroll wheel events, but not the tilt nor the side buttons.

I did look at the link and in the files. From what I can tell (and learn) the provided link relates to keyboard keys binding, and not to mouse events. Am I missing something there?

BTW, I did not mention it in the question but it may help - I am using Ubuntu as a guest OS on VMware Player on Windows 7. From my experience with a few devices, the emulation is pretty good, do Ubuntu should definitely see all messages sent by the mouse.

ok, I looked at the dmesg log. it is a pretty long list of messages. What exactly should I be looking for?

Thanks. Running the xev utility I do see lots of info, however, although the scroll up and down functions are mapped to keys 4 and 5, I do not get any event when I tilt the scroll wheel, nor when I click the two side buttons. Any ideas why?

It looks like in 11.10 the /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop file does no longer exist. Any idea on what I should use instead?
