I've been bit twiddling on hardware ever since I got my hands on a Commodore 64, and now I work for the Ubuntu Kernel Team where I specialise in working on weird hardware and firmware related bugs. You can find me on freenode in #ubuntu-kernel, IRC nick cking.

The kernel only reports what the battery is telling it. Since the value is nonsense it could be checked for and worked around in the kernel.

comment How to make a patched DSDT work in 12.04?
If I recall, we used to include a patch to enable this even after it got dropped upstream and was carried for a few releases but it was dropped because we believed it was unsafe for several reasons. But, it was a while back and I can't recall the exact details now.

comment Ubuntu restarts nightly at 12:00 EST. Why?
What do you mean by "restarts?" Is the machine powered off, and then boots on it's own accord at midnight? If it is doing that then perhaps the RTC is generating a wakealarm event and this triggers the machine to wakeup.

Well I can only presume the community wiki is wrong. How should I know? I only work full time on this.

I seriously think if you get a lot of MCEs then something is unhappy with the hardware somewhere. Honestly, I look at tens of thousands of bugs each year and whenever you get serious MCEs like this is it invariably H/W related.
