Were you using a program that messes with Unity's settings like Unity Tweak at some point?

@rusty should be instantaneous. If none of these fixed your issue I would recommend opening a new question.

comment Restore SSH Key from txt
I've updated the question with the information requested. I'm thinking it's something about how I'm copying/pasting the information into the private key. It seems that character returns are stored as spaces in my backup.

Doesn't seem like I can award myself the bounty. Hopefully I get that 100 points back for answering my own question!

It sounds like the partition table is corrrupted. I would try testdisk... be careful to follow the instructions very closely. cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

comment Ubuntu running very very very very … very slow
Just a clarification, 64-bit operating systems are for using RAM greater than 4GB. If the computer has less than 4GB, even if the architecture supports 64bit, it's often worse off (especially in the case of 1 to 2GB) because a 64bit OS has a larger memory footprint for all programs running on the computer in comparison to a 32bit OS. Rule of thumb here is to use a 32bit OS when you have anything less than 4GB of RAM.
