Excellent. Worked as a charm. All working again. One note: I did not have to remove this directory sudo rm /etc/mysql/ -R - it was simply not present in my case. Anyway - luckily it was just a local install to test Wordpress.. Wonder what would happen on a real server o_O

Thanks for prompt feedback. my.cnf file is in /etc/mysql/my.cnf in my case. Is that correct location? dmesg gives me pleeenty of output which is beyond my comprehension :/ I indeed had 5.1 installed - does that have any consequences?
