All we did was remove the execute bit. You can try sudo chmod 755 $(which pulseaudio) That should revert the change. Sorry for the problem caused.

I used to have problems with pulseaudio, you can try sudo chmod -x $(which pulseaudio). After this restart. Might work, might not. To revert the change you can do sudo chmod +x $(which pulseaudio)

Looking at your screenshot, everything looks correct. It shows you a M instead of a numeric value to indicate if a channel is muted. Do you have pulseaudio installed?

run sudo alsamixer and make sure that your device isn't muted.

comment How do I change permissions on a FAT32 drive?
You can't change permissions for files on FAT filesystems. Your error suggests that you have specified the wrong device name.

There's OWA which is a web interface. I use that when I'm outside the corporate firewall and need to access email.

comment Won't let me log in after updating
There's something wrong with the choice of your desktop environment. Try changing your session. If you can log in via the command line then your ubuntu installation is ok.

Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and try logging in there. You should be able to see the message that you get there. Please post that here.

comment 12.04 Can wireless network be active at login?
I think wireless is enabled on the login screen itself before you actually log in. Will you be using ubuntu server edition? I'm sure you can specify which wireless network you want to connect to from the command line too.

comment How to set higher resolution in Ubuntu server 12.04?
If you type xrandr on a console it will show you the resolutions that your monitor supports, you can change it like xrandr -s 1024x768 with a resolution that is listed there. You may need to update your kernel if it doesn't have the drivers for your video card. But in all likelihood it should have them built in unless you've compiled it manually?

comment 12.04 Can wireless network be active at login?
You could enable autologin and also allow it to automatically connect to the wireless network in network manager. If you have a static ip then you will be able to ssh into it easily. There may be something extra that may need to be done for dynamic ips.

Are you sure that ubuntu doesn't recognize the device at all? Post the output of dmesg | tail after inserting the device.
