Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and try logging in there. You should be able to see the message that you get there. Please post that here.

comment 12.04 Can wireless network be active at login?
I think wireless is enabled on the login screen itself before you actually log in. Will you be using ubuntu server edition? I'm sure you can specify which wireless network you want to connect to from the command line too.

comment How to set higher resolution in Ubuntu server 12.04?
If you type xrandr on a console it will show you the resolutions that your monitor supports, you can change it like xrandr -s 1024x768 with a resolution that is listed there. You may need to update your kernel if it doesn't have the drivers for your video card. But in all likelihood it should have them built in unless you've compiled it manually?

comment 12.04 Can wireless network be active at login?
You could enable autologin and also allow it to automatically connect to the wireless network in network manager. If you have a static ip then you will be able to ssh into it easily. There may be something extra that may need to be done for dynamic ips.

Are you sure that ubuntu doesn't recognize the device at all? Post the output of dmesg | tail after inserting the device.

comment How to switch off automatic kernel updates?
You can lock packages to a certain version. The terms that will help you find something on google should be dpkg hold package. I'm sorry but I don't remember the syntax.

comment Will software in Ubuntu work in Xubuntu as well?
@xubuntix because I believe that your answer doesn't answer the question that the OP has. Also the desktop environment is just the cosmetic look and feel, the underlying OS is the same and so are the repositories from which all the software is available. Just because xfce uses thunrar instead of nautilus by default doesn't change this fact.
