I'm interested in programming language design, compilers, computer graphics, robotics, video games, and other stuff. Programming languages I use on a regular basis include Python, Java and C++. I'm also a fan of Scheme, and I'm currently learning Haskell, Clojure and Scala.

comment Where's kprinter in Lucid?
What do you mean "the GUI coming with Ubuntu as default"? I'm looking for a tool that provides a nice GUI for selecting printers and setting print options to applications that just expect to be able to pipe PostScript to an external command. That's what kprinter did, and it was great until it vanished. gtklp also does this, though the UI is nowhere as nice as kprinter. BTW: you should use at-replying in comments if you want the person you're talking to to get a notification. It took me almost a year to see your comment because I didn't get a notification about it.

FWIW: I filed a bug about this: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/665297

Strangely, I have not seen the dialog appear again. That opening a settings dialog and then dismissing it without changing anything would actually alter the behavior seems like a bug, but at least it appears to solve my problem. Thanks.

Thanks. Is there an alternative that's better than gtklp?

comment Many directories have a “.d” suffix/extension. What does it mean?
And as for those two "wayward scripts" mentioned in the question: their names are referring to the /etc/rc?.d directories.

I haven't tested (yet), but why would opening a settings dialog and then dismissing it without changing anything cause the behavior to change?

I went there and "Do Nothing" was already selected for CD Audio, DVD Video, Music Player, Photos and "Other Media/audio DVD".

And as if to taunt me, now when the dialog appears "Do Nothing" is selected and "Always perform this action" is already checked! Where's the "What part of 'Always' don't you understand?" button?

That's actually the thread that made me aware of gtklp's existence. That thread is from 2004, so it predates Lucid by quite a bit. The two alternatives to kprinter it mentions aren't as nice (though gtklp is much nicer than xpp).

I should have mentioned that I tried that. The error I got was: "Package kdeprint is not available, but is referred to by another package."

I'm using Ubuntu. I mostly use Gnome, but I use a few random KDE apps.
