comment How to make everything on stdout be read aloud (using espeak)?
Nope, what I'm looking for is something that will automatically do that for every command I type. My ultimate goal is to have a computer set up without a monitor, which will just read all of stdout to me.

Trying it now. At first, no luck, but I'll try the version in xorg edgers.

Did you try what I suggested in my answer below? If it worked, please mark the answer as accepted, and if it didn't, tell me the error and I can try to help debugging it.

You want to do "sudo apt-get install synaptic", and when it's done installing, do "gksudo synaptic". You shouldn't need programming, synaptic is an alternative to the Ubuntu software centre. Search for the "rails" package, and right click it, then click properties. Note that synaptic, the package manager, shouldn't be confused with synaptics, the touchpad drivers. Confusing, I know.

Did you install them from the .run file, or did you generate .deb packages from the .run file?

comment Unable to access/mount 2nd hard drive in laptop
Can you give us some of the output of "sudo fdisk -l" to see if it's even recognizing the drive? That will tell us if Ubuntu is aware of the drive, but hasn't been mounted.

Try typing "which rails". Can you give us the output of "echo $PATH" please? Also, can you go into Synaptic, and in the rail package, find what files it has installed? In particular you want to find the main executable, and check if it's in your path.

When you get to the recovery boot, try using control+alt+f2. Also, if a menu comes up, select boot to root prompt.

Possibly. Try rebooting and hitting the down arrow key repeatedly to try to bring up a GRUB boot menu. Alternately, you could try booting from an Ubuntu LiveCD and change Grub to show a boot menu.

I'd try installing the updates from x-updates in my answer below. If it works for you, please accept my answer. If not, let me know if you get any change in output/errors.

Try Control+Alt+F2, or F3... etc. and see if you get a command line. Alternately try Control+Alt+Backspace to quit X11. Or boot into "recovery mode" from GRUB, where you'll get a command line.

I updated my solution below with a link for how to remove the drivers. Your best bet is to uninstall AMD catalyst and start from scratch with the GPU drivers.

Okay, it probably doesn't have an xorg.conf file then. Do you know what software was updated in the last update?

Did you install the AMD 13.1 driver using a PPA, directly from their website, or using packages generated from the .run file from their website? Is the video card a "hybrid" card?

That looks like an intel chipset to me. The file is in the folder /etc/X11.

Not likely. Have you tried using the versions in the repository instead of installing it yourself? Are you 32 or 64 bit?

Can you give us more information? what kind of graphics card do you have? Can you give your xorg.conf if it exists, and maybe the vga lines from lspci?
