comment Login welcome message but no shell?
I understand your suggestion. The issue is, the user enters their username, then enters their password. Then, if PuTTY is set to not request a shell, no more output is displayed. They have no idea if the password was accepted or if their Internet connection went down, etc. It's just a bit strange to enter the password and then nothing visible happens. I don't think you can set the verbosity inside the Windows client's shell area.

Thanks for the response. I'm aware of /sbin/nologin however in that case how do I give them a message alerting them to a successful login?

comment Deluge start-up script works but won't start daemon on startup
Well, it doesn't. After 3 reboots it still doesn't start. I must type sudo start deluged every time I boot. I followed the instructions on the linked page.

I might be misunderstanding something but I don't see where on that page it says it will start automatically at startup and stay running. I just followed those instructions and restarted the machine and deluged wasn't running. I had to run sudo start deluged to start it.

comment System won't boot unless I type “exit” at initramfs prompt
@slacy I haven't been bothered to investigate it since I almost never have to reboot the file server, but I'm pretty sure the problem is to do with BusyBox, whatever that is. I think it got installed when I installed MDADM.
