comment My brightness controls aren't working (Ubuntu 14.04), how to fix?
It's a Portege z835-P360. I do not want to put it in the title because the fix simply isn'ty specific to that model or manufacturer. It may not fix all computers true, but it's not specific to this model.

Is toshiba ultrabook specific enough? The thing is I have seen this fix work for at least three other manufactuers on various other forums. So I was hesitant to state hardware in that light in case people thought the problem and the solution would only work on the hardware I list.

In order to have a shared .bashrc that works on both Linux and OSX I've since switched to unix.stackexchange.com/a/127800/10043

comment How do I set preferences for the Guake Terminal?
didn't work. requires me to sudo apt-get install quake even though I have it already and am using it. I am not doing the apt-get install suggested in case it messes up my current quake.

comment Command to identify running computer
True. I feel that they don't need to be for this users need and in fact this will allow the actual computers to change but still be identifiable this way as (for example) local, remote1 remote2, etc.

Dmitry. Good call. Turns out I had dependency issues and vim wasn't usable. Posting my answer for others.

comment When you uninstall a program on Ubuntu, does the software leave any residue?
I actually think this is really unanswerable - it depends on the program. So will, some will not. So there is no "answer" to this question.

You can lengthen it but have a [return] at the end. See unix.stackexchange.com/q/88780/10043

comment Upgrading from 9 to 13, do I have to go through minor versions?
Thanks. Sorry, still not seeing why the 9.10 version needs to be there but not 10.10, etc. I must be missing something obvious perhaps?
