comment Command to identify running computer
True. I feel that they don't need to be for this users need and in fact this will allow the actual computers to change but still be identifiable this way as (for example) local, remote1 remote2, etc.

Dmitry. Good call. Turns out I had dependency issues and vim wasn't usable. Posting my answer for others.

comment When you uninstall a program on Ubuntu, does the software leave any residue?
I actually think this is really unanswerable - it depends on the program. So will, some will not. So there is no "answer" to this question.

You can lengthen it but have a [return] at the end. See unix.stackexchange.com/q/88780/10043

comment Upgrading from 9 to 13, do I have to go through minor versions?
Thanks. Sorry, still not seeing why the 9.10 version needs to be there but not 10.10, etc. I must be missing something obvious perhaps?

Why wouldn't it be 9.04 -> 9.10 -> 10.04 -> 11.04 -> 12.04 -> 13.04 (why the 9.10?). Thanks.

Thanks. See also my own answer for some peculiarities about actually setting the keys. Had me mystified at first even though I was in the right place.

I tried commenting out the stuff after the first number, that didn't help.

My kernel.shmmax has kernel.shmmax=8589934592 (8G * 1024 * 1024 * 1024), any suggestion for the change?

I just dragged a new folder to my bookmarks, similar to above - Nautilus 12.04 - so it is still working for me.
