comment 'nvidia-settings' received an X Window System error (error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.)
Thanks! Just adding, to avoid apt-get telling me to update nvidia-setings to its newest version, I had to echo 'nvidia-settings hold' | sudo dpkg --set-selections (without telling the version).

comment rhythmbox won't play radio stations from 13.04
I got it working! Thx (I know we should no longer remain on 13.04 now that's EOL). Still I sometime get Internal Data Flow Error but relaunching Rhythmbox seems to resolve it.

Cool. I'll try this out, but I'm just afraid that apt-get would suggest the new erroneous version every time I run apt-get upgrade?

Good to know about Windows Wireless Drivers. Now I'm looking for the way to use it on USB boot (I want to verify if Ubuntu works on this machine first by USB)..

comment Stop arbitrarily “following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required”
Thanks for a clear answer. One note; unmarkauto option in apt-mark may be deprecated now (I got stopped with a message) - we may use instead hold.

@SimplySimon I do apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-update almost everyday. Do you have particular components in mind to upgate?

Although I described & labelled that I'm using Quantal, I tried your suggesting w/quantal, and didn't work to be told "E: Package 'acroread-common' has no installation candidate".

comment Xorg server configuration fail - no screens detected
I've experienced very much alike phenomenon, spent several hours to figure out. By remove + install xserver-xorg I managed to fix it. I didn't find monitors.xml but only monitors.xml.bk under ~/.config/, just to share. Thanks!!

comment E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages
+1. Worked perfectly. In my case, I just tried to apt-get remove a single pkg, which indicated other pkgs that depend on it to be removed too. Those pkgs were the ones that are distro-specific and their upgrade path was unknown to Ubuntu.

As in my description, the source of high computation is known - a simulator. It's inevitable that the simulator works very busy. But still computer should not shuts down all of sudden no matter how busy it works.
