Although I described & labelled that I'm using Quantal, I tried your suggesting w/quantal, and didn't work to be told "E: Package 'acroread-common' has no installation candidate".

comment Xorg server configuration fail - no screens detected
I've experienced very much alike phenomenon, spent several hours to figure out. By remove + install xserver-xorg I managed to fix it. I didn't find monitors.xml but only monitors.xml.bk under ~/.config/, just to share. Thanks!!

comment How do I enable Emacs keybindings in Google Chrome?
Thx for the answer and i'm sorry to be responding late. Right now I have no need to achieve what I described so I can't test. But seems to be feasible solution so +1

comment E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages
+1. Worked perfectly. In my case, I just tried to apt-get remove a single pkg, which indicated other pkgs that depend on it to be removed too. Those pkgs were the ones that are distro-specific and their upgrade path was unknown to Ubuntu.
