I work as a Platform Engineer for Mozilla, mainly on the web rendering team with a specialization in layout. I am also the lead software engineer for Lil Joe Bean and President of Glass Tower Studios, LLC.
I have a Master of Science, Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, as well as two Bachelor of Science degrees - Mathematics and Computer Science - from the University of North Dakota. My research interests include Computational Geometry, Computer Graphics (specifically 3D real-time rendering and surface-light interaction modeling).
I also volunteer my time to numerous projects, including the Crystal Space SDK, which is an open source game engine, and the Eridanus project, a game design project. I am very passionate about video games, especially with regards to high performance graphics and immersive environments.
When I'm not working or developing open source software, my major hobbies include martial arts, video games, sailing, and playing my violin. I hold the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt, Yellow Sash in Wu Chi Chuu'an Kung Fu.

Thinkpad W520 brightness modification requires suspend I will retry installing the updates, though, and see if that helps. |

Thinkpad W520 brightness modification requires suspend Yes, I know I am doing the nvidia driver a special way, but it's because I need to do it to get it working with the setup I have. :| Unfortunately, the nvidia driver that comes from apt doesn't work with my setup in the same way that the nvidia released drivers work. |

Thinkpad W520 brightness modification requires suspend @gertvdijk: Yes, actually I have a dock system with multiple monitors. I have difficulty whenever the kernel is updated, since the custom nvidia driver needs to be recompiled and re-loaded. I don't have anything against updating, I just don't want to do it too frequently, since it's a pain to get everything working again. |

Hard drive encryption boot screen resolution By the way, I think what might be happening (speculation) is that, for some reason, the Ubuntu passphrase-entering screen is displaying at the resolution of the laptop screen. That's fine, when I'm on the laptop screen, but when I'm not (80% of the time), is there a way to get it to use an alternative mode? |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors A quick note: I'm still going to give the answer to coteyr, since he helped me debug a few other things that were problematic. Moreover, I don't really like giving myself credit for something that was somewhat voodoo and random, anyway. :) |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors Is there a way to see if the xorg driver is a specific version? |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors Those were the two packages that were uninstalled when I did apt-get remove nvidia-*: nvidia-settings and nvidia-experimental-304. |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors Hm, so after doing this, I did notice that, previously nvidia-settings was a different version. But, uninstalling that and installing nvidia-settings-experimental-304, along with nvidia-experimental-304 didn't seem to do the trick. :( |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors Actually, I'm not sure how to check and see what source I'm using. I think I'm using the ubuntu main package repository, but it could be a PPA. At one point, I remember trying an nvidia package from a PPA, but I'm pretty sure I'm using the canonical repo for this package now. |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors My mistake, the above isn't actually true. If I put "nvidia" on the Driver line, then it runs in low-graphics mode, and gives me the following error (see edit, above) |

Modprobe loads nvidia driver but xorg.conf has errors Loading the "nvidia" module produces the same error message, with "nvidia" in place of "nvidia-experimental-304". Previously, when I tried to load the nvidia-experimental-310 driver, I actually needed to put in "nvidia-experimental-310" in the Driver line, as it could never find the "nvidia" driver. |

Automatically change resolution when not in dock I feel like this would work, but the hwinfo command isn't returning anything for either the docked or undocked state. (It won't detect the Lenovo LCD monitor). Any suggestions on how I might be able to get it to recognize either the dell monitor I have connected to the dock, or the lcd monitor? |

Automatically change resolution when not in dock It looks like this will work, but I'm testing it now. I'm trying to make the deadline for the bounty. If it works, I'll award it to you. |

Clone internal HDD to new SSD Yep, everything seems to be running as expected. I appreciate your help! Networking and Boot problems always seem to be the most frustrating to me. (If I could vote up your answer more than once, I would.) :D |

Clone internal HDD to new SSD This worked well. One thing I was a bit unsure on was how to configure grub, and, more specifically, that there are very different ways to configure grub legacy vs. grub2. I used the following as reference for grub2, once I installed it ( apt-get install grub2): dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html I was originally going by a grub2 installation method, when in fact, grub-legacy was installed on my system. |
