+1, this actually worked. I had the same issue with 14.04, but rm -r .cache .config .compiz fixed it; I think these files got corrupted due to a forced restart. Deleting them gives a fresh start, and now the settings, wallpaper etc. work again.

comment StartUp Disk Creator always crash at the end of process
For anyone else with the same issue, today on Ubuntu 12.10: Startup Disk Creator always crashes as described. sudo usb-creator-gtk --allow-system-internal crashes too. Unetbootin worked once I managed to install 7zip; Software Center and apt-get said there was no installation candidate. Did manual download of the deb package instead. (Download deb package, double click to install.)

@Marco How so? The first one, to IBM Developer Works, even has a benchmark graph of the write performance penalty for using unaligned partitions, and a sidebar on RAID. The blogpost by Tso on SSD alignment has moved at least twice since I wrote this. Updated the link again, but there's no guarantee it will keep working.
